Dave Johnson headed off to sea as a deck officer in 1984 and spent a number of years perfecting his craft on board a wide variety of ocean going vessels. This provided first-hand experience in the safe carrying of various descriptions of cargoes including general crates and packages, steel coils and steel products, bulk liquids, dry bulk cargoes, containers, agricultural products, timber, plant machinery and vehicles and special project heavy lifts.
Since founding General & Marine in 1994, Dave has undertaken hundreds of Independent Surveys and Insurance Assessments all over Southern Africa and has served on the Committees of various maritime bodies, while enjoying membership of The Durban Marine Insurance Association, The Society of Master Mariners, General Botha Old Boys, MENSA and the Maritime Law Association.
Jean’s experience in ships and cargoes began in 2007 when he was employed at a prominent logistics company in Cape Town. During that time he personally oversaw the packing and unpacking of thousands of shipping containers – and gaining knowledge in various cargoes including steel, bagged agricultural products and special projects. His career at General & Marine was initially on a part-time basis before becoming a full-time employee, and has involved various surveys including loading and off-loading supervision; bulk, break-bulk and bagged cargo tally; securing and damage assessment; salvaging, sorting and separating of water damaged bulk and bagged cargoes. Jean is fluent in French and this makes him a valuable member of our team when appointed to attend in the francophone African countries for cargo matters.
Martin has been actively involved in the shipping industry since the late 1980’s. During this time he has gained vast experience in handling various vessel types and cargoes from Reefer to General Cargo and Heavy-Lifts. Martin heads up the Mozambique operations servicing the ports of Pemba; Nacala; Angoche, Moma, Quelimane; Beira and Maputo. General & Marine have been a proud partner of the Rex the Rhino Conservation Fund since August 2018 and are so humbled that we get to call ourselves ‘a Rex champion’.
Our role is to fund the management of their social media platforms as well as to offer guidance and support on all digital marketing related matters.
The Rex the Rhino Conservation Fund was formed by two ex Natal Parks Board (now KZN Wildlife) friends, Frank Carlisle and Malcolm Organ.
After spending many years involved in rhino conservation, both rangers left Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve and moved into commercial tourism operations.
However, both were haunted by the passion for the wild and, particularly, their concern for the rhinos of HiP. Thus, the decision to form the Rex the Rhino Conservation Fund was made to support the heroes on the ground whose work results in wildlife populations that have protection and care.
Rex himself was developed by Bhejane Adventures and Mpafa Travel, in collaboration with the Groenfontein Toy Project, all of these beautifully handcrafted shweshwe soft toys are manufactured just outside Plettenberg Bay.
This initiative empowers local women through income generation while contributing to Rhino conservation.
Rex’s story is a win-win for all: the ladies who create him, the rhinos he represents, the anti-poaching teams he supports and the businesses who support his cause.
Rex’s voice, it seems, has filled a niche. The need for a small voice, with an enormous impact, that speaks to men, women, and children, has been fulfilled – and we as General & Marine are so proud to be a part of this.
